Overgrown lots, old fencerows, honeysuckle thickets and small trees, cleared and hauled off, not mulched and left on your ground. We work out of Lexington, sixteen miles down I-75, so a Scott County job is a normal day's work rather than a trip we have to build a route around.
Cleared material leaves the property: we run our own trucks and dumpsters
Two or three photos and your ZIP gets you a number within two hours, guaranteed
Inside the city limits or out in the county? It changes who can make you cut it; see below
Most people who call us about an overgrown lot around Georgetown weren't planning a landscaping project. Something arrived in the post, or they think it's about to. Here it's a different question from the one people ask in Lexington, and a fair few get the answer wrong.
2Separate authorities, depending on which side of the Georgetown city line your lot sits on
City of Georgetown, KY, Code Enforcement, and the Scott County Fiscal Court's own ordinances
Inside the Georgetown city limits, it's the city. Georgetown Code Enforcement investigates tall grass and property maintenance among other things. An officer issues a Notice of Violation or a Citation, and the owner is given a set amount of time either to put it right or to contest it. That office is on (502) 603-5844, at 125 W Clinton Street.
Outside them, in unincorporated Scott County, it's the Fiscal Court's ordinance, and this is the part people get wrong. The county's weeds-and-high-grass ordinance applies to residential areas, and it defines those by zoning district rather than by what the land looks like:
R-1A, LB, 1C, 2 and 3
B1, B2 and B3
N1 and P1
Non-conforming housing uses
Subdivisions with an approved plat
It is not a blanket rule over every acre in the county. If your ground is not in one of those categories, the county ordinance is not what's reaching you.
One statewide rule sits over both of them, and it's the one worth understanding. Under KRS 65.8840 a local government has to give the owner proper notice and a right to a hearing, but if it goes ahead and abates the nuisance itself, it takes a lien against the property covering the civil fines, the charges, the fees and the abatement costs, and the owner is personally liable for that amount. Having it cut for you is almost always the expensive way to get it cut.
And the exception that matters most around here. The same statute says its provisions "shall not be enforced by a county government upon any premises situated in an unincorporated portion of the county that is assessed as agricultural land for tax purposes." A great deal of ground around Georgetown is still assessed that way. If somebody has told you the county is about to clear your field and send you the bill, it is worth checking how your parcel is assessed before you agree to anything.
This is a plain-English summary, not legal advice, and we're deliberately not quoting you a height in inches. Lexington-Fayette publishes a single figure; Georgetown and Scott County work through their own ordinances and their own enforcement offices, and what applies to your lot is a question for them rather than for us. Georgetown Code Enforcement, (502) 603-5844, is the authority inside the city, and the Scott County Fiscal Court's ordinances outside it. Send us photos and we'll tell you what we can see from them. Send photos and ask
Vacant lots, rentals between tenants and back halves of properties that got away over a couple of summers, including the dense thickets along the lines nobody mows, which around Georgetown usually means bush honeysuckle with company. Inside the city limits this is the job most often driven by a notice.
Scott County has a great deal of small acreage that was worked or grazed within living memory. Bringing it back is a different job from clearing a suburban lot, and it's priced differently.
Drives, fence lines and access routes. On county acreage this is very often the whole job: getting equipment in, getting the sight line back at the end of a long drive, keeping a fence line workable.
Getting a lot, pad, drive or outbuilding site ready to work on. Georgetown has been building steadily for decades, and a fair share of that has gone up on ground that was farmed before it was platted.
Under about 20 feet. Taller than that is a tree service.
Volunteer trees and the scrub that comes up along an unworked line, plus the stumps they leave behind. On reclaimed pasture that twenty-foot cap matters more than it does on a town lot: there is usually at least one that has been standing longer than the fence.
Clearing ground that used to be pasture is not the same job as clearing a back lot, and the difference usually isn't the brush.
What's in there
Why an unworked line fills in so fast
Amur bush honeysuckle spreads by birds eating the fruit and dropping the seed, and a mature plant puts out an enormous number of them. It leafs out earlier in spring and holds its leaves later in autumn than the natives around it, so it gets a longer growing season than anything competing with it. On ground that was grazed it rarely comes alone: briars, volunteer locust and scrub build up along the old line with it.
Two or three seasons is all it takes for a fence line to go from walkable to impassable, without anybody doing anything wrong.
What clearing does
We'll get the line back. We won't pretend it's dead.
We cut it, load it and haul it off, and you get the ground back. But cutting alone doesn't kill honeysuckle: it resprouts from the stump, and lasting control takes either repeated cutting over several years or herbicide treatment of the cut stumps. We clear and haul; we don't spray. Your county Extension office will tell you what to put on the stumps and when, and it's a far cheaper job once the thicket is down to them.
And tell us if the ground was ever fenced. Old woven and barbed wire grows into a fencerow and none of it shows in a photograph. It has to come out by hand, and finding it once the work has started is worse for both of us than knowing about it beforehand.
Land clearing prices in Georgetown
These are the same published ranges as the main land clearing service. A page about one city shouldn't quote you a different number from the page about the service. You get a firm figure before anything starts, and you only pay for work completed.
Small residential lot$400 to $1,200
Light brush and undergrowth. A back corner, a side yard, a fence line that's got away from you.
Medium or overgrown lot$1,200 to $3,500+
Dense brush and small trees. A full honeysuckle thicket, or ground that hasn't been touched in years.
Full site preparation$800 to $3,500+
Clearing plus rough grading, worked to your plan rather than to a tidy-up.
Property size
The single biggest driver, and the one you already know.
Vegetation density
Waist-high weeds and a honeysuckle thicket are different jobs on the same square footage.
Accessibility
Whether a truck and trailer can get to the work, or it's carried out by hand.
Haul-off

Very quick from contact to in home to remove some flooring. Once on site they got straight to work and did an outstanding job! Very reasonable price for the work done. Will continue to use them for all future needs.
Sean S. Georgetown, KY
Very hard workers that cleaned out a whole house that was trashed and filthy. Very polite and considered. Would definitely recommend this company!

Questions we get from Scott County
If yours isn't here, call: we'd rather answer it before you book than after.
Got a notice with a date on it?
Send the photos with the address, and say whether it's inside the city limits. Whether the date is workable is the first thing we come back on, not the last.
How tall can grass and weeds legally be in Georgetown?
It depends on which side of the city line your property is on, which is why there's no single number on this page. Inside the Georgetown city limits, the city's Code Enforcement office handles tall grass and property maintenance: an officer issues a Notice of Violation or a Citation and you're given a set time to correct it or contest it; they're on (502) 603-5844. Outside the city, in unincorporated Scott County, the Fiscal Court's weeds-and-high-grass ordinance applies to residential areas as it defines them by zoning, plus subdivisions with an approved plat, not to every acre in the county. Those two offices are the authority on what applies to your address, and we'd rather send you to them than quote you a figure off a website.
My property is assessed as farmland. Can the county make me clear it?
Generally not, and this catches people out. KRS 65.8840 says its provisions "shall not be enforced by a county government upon any premises situated in an unincorporated portion of the county that is assessed as agricultural land for tax purposes." So for ground outside a city that is assessed agricultural, the county's nuisance route doesn't reach you. Two cautions: it says county government, so a property inside the Georgetown city limits is a different question entirely, and what matters is how the parcel is actually assessed rather than what it is being used for. Check the assessment before you assume either way.
What happens if I leave it and they clear it for me?
It becomes the expensive way of getting it cut. Under KRS 65.8840 a local government has to give you proper notice and a right to a hearing first, but if it abates the nuisance itself, it takes a lien against the property covering the civil fines, the charges, the fees and the abatement costs, and you're personally liable for that amount. A lien also tends to surface at the worst possible moment, which is when you go to sell or refinance.
Will the honeysuckle come back once you've cleared the fencerow?
Yes. It comes back from the stump, and cutting is not the thing that kills it. Getting on top of honeysuckle for good takes either several years of repeated cutting or a herbicide treatment applied to the cut stumps. We do the cutting, the loading and the haul-off; we don't spray, and the Scott County Extension office is the right place to ask what goes on the stumps and when. The useful part is the arithmetic: once a thicket is down to stumps, whoever treats them is dealing with a fraction of the plant they were looking at before. And if that line was ever fenced, say so: old wire grown into a fencerow comes out by hand and never shows up in a photograph.
What does land clearing cost in Georgetown?
Light brush and undergrowth on a small residential lot is $400 to $1,200. Dense brush with small trees, on a medium or badly overgrown lot, is $1,200 to $3,500 and up. Site preparation is quoted against the plan rather than off a range. Those are deliberately the same figures as our main land clearing page: which page you landed on shouldn't change what a job costs. Around Georgetown the two things that move a quote most are how far in from the road the work sits and how dense the fencerow has got, so one photo from the gate and one from the growth itself is usually all we need.
Do you work outside the Georgetown city limits?
Yes, across Scott County, and the county work is a good part of what we do here. We're based in Lexington, sixteen miles down I-75, so getting to Scott County is routine rather than something we have to plan a route around. Give us the address rather than just the town when you send photos: on acreage, whether a truck and trailer can reach the work is one of the four things that moves the price.
